Just In: ECOWAS leaders rally for action against Niger Republic military junta
ECOWAS leaders have taken a decisive stance, calling for the swift activation of force against the military junta in Niger Republic.
This resolute move is underscored by the leaders’ conviction that diplomatic dialogues have been met with defiant rejection by the coup leaders. Expressing deep concern over the ongoing detention of President Mohamed Bazoum, and his family, the leaders condemned these actions, paving the way for a united response.
The regional body, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has garnered support for its resolution from the African Union (AU), partner countries, and international institutions. The collective call for action amplifies the gravity of the situation and seeks to mobilize a coordinated response.
The momentous decision was reached at an Extraordinary Summit on the Political Situation in Niger Republic. This significant gathering saw the participation of eight leaders from ECOWAS member countries, along with the Foreign Ministers of Liberia and the Gambia. Mauritania’s President, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, and Burundi’s President, Everiste Ndayishimiye, added their voices to the discussion, responding to the invitation extended by their counterparts.
The outcome of this summit underscores the regional commitment to upholding stability, democratic principles, and respect for the rule of law. As ECOWAS leaders unite to address this critical situation, their actions reflect the collective desire for a swift and effective resolution.
